Â
There are many things you should be aware of depending on what your domain extension is.
Â
.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .ca Domain Names
Â
For example, if your domain is a .com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz your current registrar likely has your domain in a locked status. This means that your domain cannot be transferred until it is unlocked. In addition, domains with these extensions require an EPP key, also known as a Transfer Authorization Code. Without this, you will not be able to complete the transfer. As well, your domain must be 60 days old in order to qualify for transfer. This is a policy set out by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, http://www.icann.org/).
Â
When you request a transfer you will have to ensure that your domain is eligible for transfer, and that you have obtained your EPP key. You will need to use the EPP key to verify the transfer. You can retrieve the EPP key from your current registrar. You will be prompted to enter it during signup.
Â
Once we initiate the transfer, an email will go to the administrative email address registered to the domain. If you are unsure what that email address is, you should contact your current registrar to verify. If your domain is in privacy status (meaning a whois lookup does not show the contact information registered to your domain for security reasons), you’ll want to ask your current registrar to disable it as it can impede the verification email.
Â
The domain transfer email you receive will come from OpenSRS Transfers, which you should be on the lookout for in any junk folders. When you receive this email, you will be asked to navigate to a URL to begin the verification process. The first page of the verification will ask for your domain name and a transfer key. Please note that this is NOT your EPP key. This is a key to enter the verification site and it is provided to you in the verification email. Your verification email will look like this:
